2000 and Sassy…

IMG_4392

As we turn the page I realize that 2013 has been amazing and definitely Sassy!

On April 1st, I dove head-first into blogland and published my first post here at The Sassy Quilter. I began by paying homage to my Grandmother and teacher(her nickname was “Sassy”, the original) and my very first quilt that I finished with her six years ago. You can read all about it here in My Quilt Story.

Every day since has been packed full of quilty goodness and I am loving every minute of it! My quilty universe is ever expanding with new things to learn, quilts to make, friends to meet, fabric to buy(of course) and the inspiration from my fellow bloggers is never ending.

Here is a 2013 Sassy review:

Just a few more days till the New Year begins and I just want to thank everyone who has visited The Sassy Quilter and made my year the best one yet!

I am enjoying some time off between the holidays to wrap up some projects before 2014. Here is whats on my design wall right now…

These were leftover HST’s from a chevron quilt(below) that I made earlier this year. You can see in the pic above I have several quilt tops hanging around my sewing room that seriously need to be quilted…2014 for those. I will be happy if I can at least finish up these quilt tops for now!

Here is another I finished up….my Virtual Quilting Bee quilt top! Finally got those borders on there.

Snowman Ornaments

IMG_4228

Welcome to my home! Come sit by the fire and let’s make a Christmas ornament….

Just kidding this is not my house! My office went and had lunch here yesterday. It’s called Michie Tavern and is in historical Charlottesville, Virginia near Monticello(Thomas Jefferson’s home).  We love going here every Christmas. Really gets me in the Christmas spirit. I love all the home-made decorations and ornaments.

I do want to make some cute little snowman ornaments with you guys though! It is a super simple one that is perfect for just a little something to share with friends or in my case co-workers.

IMG_4241

Find a fabric that has a cute shape you like on it that is ornament sized. I used these little snowmen, but an ornament, santa, elf or christmas tree would be fun. You will also need a backing fabric and some small scraps of batting or felt will work for the middle layer. (Yes! I finally had a reason to pull out all those batting scraps I saved:) )

IMG_0003

Trim out your design for the ornament leaving some extra room for trimming. Starch the fabrics well for some extra stiffness.

Layer them up just like a quilt sandwich! No need to baste, they will stick together just fine.

IMG_4233

IMG_4234

Now, get to stitching! I used my FMQ foot…yes it got a little crazy! Do what ever you like and they are so quick and easy you can try different threads too.

IMG_4239

I tried outlining with a space around the shape and some on the edges. Also, I tried some different types of fmq stitches.

Trim with sharp scissors or pinking shears.

Last, I used short pieces of DMC floss and a large eyed needle to stitch through the top and then tied it in a knot…instant hanger for the ornament!

Done:)

Oh, and don’t forget about this weeks giveaway here.

Handmade Happiness!

IMG_4139

Whew, it has been too long!  My wonderful(not so sassy) quilt weekend turned into being sick and laying on the couch the whole entire time:( But…I am feeling better now and glad to be back. I was able to get a couple things done, made a few HST’s and finally hung up this super cute print for my sewing room. I won a couple of these in July and am just now getting them up! I think happiness really is homemade, you have to create it yourself and not just wait for it to happen to you.

**ALERT**

Cutest fabric ever!

IMG_4142

I have had my eye on this adorable print and finally took the plunge.

It is Kokka French Bulldog in mint, a Japanese import Oxford Cotton. Kinda pricey…8.00 for a half yard.

And I won one of the 160 giveaways I entered in the Giving Thanks Blog Hop at Quilting Gallery:)

IMG_4147 IMG_4149 IMG_4150 IMG_4152 IMG_4154

The cutest FQ prints from Sharon at Fabrics and Flowers. Thanks Sharon!

They are from the Handle with Care by Suzy Ultman. Look at this amazing quilt she is working on! I am in love with these borders.fabricsandflowers.blogspot.com

This really inspires me to not be so lazy when doing my borders:)

Christmas fun coming Soon!

IMG_4158

Millstone Quilts, one of my local quilt shops, was generous to donate some charm packs to The Sassy Quilter to share!

So for the rest of December I am hosting a giveaway each Monday. I also have some yummy Aurifil goodness to share! So be sure to check in each Monday to win a little of both.

I will make these giveaways super easy to enter….no hoops:) These treats will definitely bring some holiday cheer!

Piper Progress – Double Slice

20131124-175941.jpg

Double Slice Quilt

Hola quilt people! Hope everyone had a great weekend and are getting ready for turkey day:) My family had an early Thanksgiving because my baby bro finally got some leave from the Navy and had to go back yesterday. So, guess what…that’s right, I’m looking at a nice long quilt weekend coming up!

20131124-181308.jpg

We did have cold, but nice weather so I finally got a few pics of my Piper quilt. The pattern is Double Slice, from Missouri Star Quilt Co. Great for layer cakes because you start with 10″ squares. My previous post on how to make the blocks is here.

20131124-181412.jpg

If you just love this line of fabric, Piper by Dear Stella, check out Melissa at My Fabric Relish. She just finished up a gorgeous quilt using the same line.

Soon as the basting fairy picks up this and the four others also waiting in line…I will have eventually have some final pics;)
