Why Quilting is the best hobby ever!

Are you happy?

I mean really happy???

Well Quilting is one of the fastest ways to get there!

According to the PERMA model of happiness, designed by Martin Seligman, there are five core elements of psychological well-being and happiness… and Quilting will help you check all 5 off the list! These five elements can lead you to a life of fulfillment, happiness, and meaning.

PERMA model of happiness

A scientific theory to happiness - perma model

Let’s look at each element:

Positive Emotions

This is more than just smiling and acting happy… You have to have a positive outlook and be optimistic. This positive mindset will inspire you to be more creative and take more chances. Now you know we need and use a lot of that in quilting! Positivity keeps our minds moving and thinking which is just one of the health benefits to optimism. Now there is a difference between pleasure and enjoyment… Pleasure is meeting our basic needs, Enjoyment is evolves from intellectual stimulation and creativity. Quilting brings us much enjoyment and positive feelings.

Engagement(Flow)

We need a hobby that requires our full engagement to grow our happiness. It must totally absorb us in the present moment…. creating Flow. I don’t know about you but when I have a day to totally commit to quilting, I am totally in my Flow…. it feels awesome and I am definitely happy. Everyone is different and we find our own Flow.

Relationships

We are social people that thrive on connecting and interacting with other people. Having positive relationships is important for many reasons. They provide support, joy, love, intimacy and many others. It is even proven that pain centers in the brain are activated if we are at risk of being alone or isolated… mainly because being alone ultimately doesn’t protect your survival. Quilting is just full of social connections! I absolutely love all the friends I’ve made through quilting and blogging. There is nothing better than connecting with someone who loves what I love. I’m a dental hygienist and schedule extra time for all my quilty patients… I need to talk longer to my sassy friends:)

Meaning

Having purpose on this earth is essential to having a fulfilled and happy life. It gives us a reason to live. Taking the time to understand why you do what you do is important. I believe Quilting is like anything else that gives us meaning and purpose. Not only does it make us happy, it lets us show love and meaning to those around us. You only get a free quilt because someone loves you! I quilt because I love the physical tasks involved, sometimes tedious, sometimes not. I love sharing my love of quilting with others and helping them grow. I love how finishing projects makes me feel and last but not least I love giving someone I love a quilt. It’s like wrapping myself around them, a never ending hug! Our hobby has great purpose!

Achievement

Goals, ambition… these things provide us a sense of accomplishment. Making quilt goals and meeting them helps us thrive and grow! The feeling of finishing that difficult quilt or piecing those difficult blocks shows us we can do anything we put our minds to. I love to check things off  my list and my quilt goals list is no different. Make sure your goals are realistic so that you can see yourself grow and become the person you want to be.

So get out there! Find what makes you happy, be positive, dive in, engage with friends, and challenge yourself! Enjoy your quilting and take pride in how it makes you feel…. even if your friends still think you knit and or make blankets, lol.

Let’s talk about…Needles

I’ve been doing a “Let’s talk about… Quilting” series about all the different parts and pieces of quilting. You can find my two previous posts here about Batting and Starch.

I hope you are enjoying them… they are a little on the educational side. Sometimes its good to dig deep and really get to know about our quilting tools and supplies!

Let’s talk about Sewing Machine Needles…

First things first, what are the parts of a needle?

Parts of a Needle

Did you know a needle had a scarf???

The scarf of the needle is a small trough that helps the hook(in the bobbin case) pick up the thread.  The eye of the needle is actually bigger on one side, so if you are having a hard time threading your needle… try the other side. The side where the groove is also helps to guide the thread through the eye.

myBluprint.com

Needle Sizes

Needles come in all sizes and there are several types of needles you can use.

The most common universal sizes are:

  • 70/10- used for lighter wt. fabrics like polyester or silk
  • 80/12-most used for medium wt. fabrics like cotton and linen
  • 90/14- used for heavier fabrics
  • Microtex(Sharp)-slimmer needle with fine point. Excellent for piecing and using with batiks

Other types of specialty needles are:

  • Ballpoint-used for knits
  • Denim and Leather-for heavy fabrics like denim or leather
  • Curved-for hemming

How often do you change your needle?

Sewing machine needles are good for about 4-8hrs of sewing. That being said… Needles are inexpensive and I recommend changing with each project and especially when machine quilting.

You can tell when a needle is getting dull by a “punching” sound it makes when trying to pierce the fabric. Another clue is thread breaking, skipping stitches or tension issues.

Hope you enjoyed this post! Leave a comment if there is anything you would like to know more about:)

The “logs” are from a honeybun(1.5″strips), so they are skinny!

The quilt has a very soft feel to it and for some reason I feel drawn to hand quilt it.

My grandmother was a hand quilter so it makes me feel close to her when I always have a hand quilting project going. My last was the Wonky Christmas Tree you can see HERE.

Believe it or not… there are two blocks turned the wrong way in there! Dang it!

I am gonna fix them… mostly because they are on the edge. LOL.

No matter how long you have quilted!!! You STILL make mistakes. That is what is so perfectly imperfect about quilting. I love every mistake I see in my grandmothers quilts. Every wonky stitch or crooked piece is so personal and filled with love.

Maybe I should leave them that way????

Ask Sassy! Quilting Questions…

Ask Sassy!

Today’s quilty question:

What do I try if my thread keeps breaking???

Well, first things first… Completely re-thread your machine and bobbin.

white singer sewing machine

If that doesn’t do the trick… Let’s look at your thread and needle!

When quilting we are generally using a 40 or 50wt cotton thread. If using a special type of thread, you may need a special needle. Otherwise, a universal needle should be fine.

Secondly…. When did you last change your needle??? This is one of the biggest things we as quilters forget to do! Every 4 to 8 hrs of sewing needs a new needle. They cost cents… so just change it for every new project. When machine quilting a quilt I always start with a fresh needle.

myBluprint.com

What else do we always forget to do???

Clean our machines. So if you’re still having trouble… give your machine a quick de-fuzzing!

These are just a few quick things to try! Hope these tips helps you guys.

Curvy Clutch

Curvy Clutch

So…. I am not a big bag maker. I have made just a few, but am ready to dive in and up my bag making skills!

I recently went to QuiltCon and purchased this cute little kit on the right to make this zipper pouch.

The pattern is called the Curvy Clutch and is from Pink Door Fabrics. The kit came with every thing I needed except the interfacing.

You can find the free pattern HERE.

There is always a little learning curve to making bags…. so different from making quilts!

On this bag I accidentally cut my fabric in the wrong direction and didn’t have enough fabric left for my second piece. I had to come up with some quick thinking and made a seam down the middle of one side to make it work. There is usually always a way to get it done!

I just love the way this came out! It isn’t perfect but not too bad.

I can’t wait to keep trying some new patterns!

Leave a comment of your favorite bag pattern if you have one:)

Christmas in March?

So I finally finished my Christmas quilt!

A couple months late but its all good because this quilt is just for me:)

Get Up to 70% Off Clearance Items at shop.mybluprint.com 2/26-2/27/19, no coupon needed!

This quilt was made using the free block Modern Christmas Tree pattern at Diary of a Quilter HERE.

It finishes at 63 x 68. 9 blocks across by 8 blocks down.

I just love these wonky trees. They were super easy to make.

I decided to hand quilt this one using Big Stitch Quilting! This was super fun and goes pretty quickly. I uses a 12wt Aurifil thread. This really makes the stitches stand out. I think it adds a lot to the wonky feel with the folk style stitching.

HERE is a video on how to do Big Stitch Hand Quilting.

Let’s talk about… Starch!

Let’s talk about Spray Starch!

So I brought up the topic of spray starch in last weeks Sassy tip post… let’s dive in and learn a little more about starch and how we as quilters use it.

Starch” is a German word meaning strong or stiff. Where does if come from?  It comes from a variety of plants such as potatoes, wheat, rice and corn.

When combined with warm water it is used as a thickening, stiffening, and gluing agent. We use it in food, wallpaper, on our fabrics and all kinds of other things.

We enjoy starch for its stiffening qualities. It gives us our fresh looking collars and pleats in our clothes and in quilting it stiffens the fabric(helps with bias), keep fabrics clean(dirt sticks to starch and then washes off), helps to remove wrinkles, keeps seams flat and makes the fabric easier to handle or join with other types of fabric.

Let’s look at some of the most popular starching agents in Quilting…

Image result for what is spray starch made of Aerosol Spray Starch– most common type of spray starch. This sprays a fine mist which is easily distributed over your fabric. Be careful not to spray too heavily or you might get some white flaking. Letting starch dry before pressing with a dry iron also helps!

Image result for what is spray starch made of best press

Best Press Spray Starch– This starch is different because it is actually a starch alternative. It is made with a soil guard, wrinkle resister and shatterproof spray bottle. It also has a lighter weight to it and because of the spray bottle it does spray in mist/droplet spray. It comes in various scents and unscented. One of Best Press’s best features is that it is no flake and no clog , meaning it won’t leave any white residue on your dark fabrics!

Image result for what is spray starch made of flatter

Flatter is another Starch Alternative. They call themselves a Smoothing Spray. It has all the same qualities, but also boast that they are environment friendly and easy on sensitive skin. This is definitely the least stiff in my opinion, but still a nice spray and it comes in lots of great scents!

Spray starch is one of the many tools we have in quilting that makes our job just a little bit easier! So if you haven’t tried it yet… give it a go!
