Union Jack Sewing Machine Cover Tutorial and Giveaway!

unionjacktutorial

Hi there! Paula here at The Sassy Quilter and I am so excited to be the first stop on the

Riley Blake Designs Union Jack Blog Tour!

Union Jack Blog Tour

So….Have you guys seen Riley Blake Designs super cute Union Jack panels!!! Well, I have come up with a sewing machine cover tutorial for you to put these snazzy prints to use. We don’t want our precious machines getting all dusty and if you have ever tried to piece one of these Union Jack designs you will totally appreciate how quick and easy these panels are to use.

Riley Blake has three different color options for a multi flag panel. The smaller flags within the panel are each 9″ x 11″. There is also a giant flag panel that measures 36″ x 42″ and comes in three color options. Click HERE to see!

Today I am using the Union Jack Squares Gray panel.

What you will need:

1 Union Jack Squares Gray panel.

5 Fat Quarters in assorted prints.

1/4 yard Border fabric.

1 and 1/4 yards Backing fabric.

1/2 yard Binding fabric.

rileyblakedots

I am using a collection of Riley Blake Swiss Dots with my panel prints!

Cutting:

From Panel-

Trim two flags to 9.5″ x 11.5″- (1/4″ around the flag)

From Border fabric-

Cut (2)- 4.25″ x  WOF strips, then subcut (4) 4.25″ x 9.5″ rectangles.

Cut (2)- 2.5″ x WOF strips, the subcut (4) 2.5″ x 19″ strips.

From FQ’s-

Cut (1)- 9.5″ strip from each FQ, then subcut (6) 2″ x 9.5″ strips for a total of 30.

From Backing fabric-

Cut (1)- 17″ x WOF strip, cut again on fold to yield backing for front & back panels.

Cut (2)- 12″ x WOF strips, trim selvages and join along the 12″ edge. Trim this long strip to 12″ x 50″ and use as backing for the side panel.

From Binding fabric-

Cut (1) 18″ x WOF strip, then subcut 2.5″ strips on the bias and create at least 160″ of bias binding.

Construction

unionjackpiecingPiece together your front and back panels. Add your side borders first and then the top and bottom borders. Repeat for the back panel.

unionjack6

Join your 2″ strips together to form one long side panel.

      unionjacksidepanel unionjackquiltedfronts

Layer your front and back panels and your side panel with batting and backing, quilt as desired.

Trim your side panel to 9.5″ x 45.5″ and the front/back panels to 13″ x 18.5″.

Using your bias binding…bind the bottom edge of the front & back panel and both short ends of the side panel.

unionjackcenters

Line up the center point of the front panel with the center point of the side panel. Pin these together with the backing sides together.

unionjack7

Join these two panels together stopping and starting 1/4″ from the corners. Repeat for the back panel.

unionjack8

Now, pin the remaining sides of the front & back panels to the side panel and stitch together, also stopping and starting 1/4″ from the corners.

unionjack9

Your sewing machine cover should look like this, with raw edges exposed.

unionjack10

Now to bind these raw edges!

Starting at one of the bottom corners…Fold the end of your binding under about 1/2″ and start attaching your bias binding to the side panel side of the raw edge.  I stop and start 1/4″ from the top corners to avoid any puckering in the corner. Do not trim anything…just skip a few stitches and then keep going.  Bias binding is stretchy so should go around smoothly.  Stop sewing about 3″ from the final corner. Mark your binding strip and trim 1/2″ longer than needed. Fold this extra under and then finish attaching the binding. Repeat for the opposite side of the cover.

unionjack11

Hand stitch the binding to the front & back panels.

unionjack12

The finished dimensions are 9.5″W x 13″H x 18.5″L. It will fit most average size machines.

  unionjack13

Done! I think it looks bloody fabulous;)

Free Pattern-“Feel the Love” Valentine Wall Hanging!

IMG_5069

Do you Feel the Love?

All the hearts and valentine projects I have been seeing here in the blogosphere inspired me to come up with a quick project that I could get done this weekend. I came up with this free pattern for a Valentine Wall Hanging called “Feel the Love”.

Here is a quick tutorial!

IMG_4962

Fabric needed: a layer cake or (10-12) 10″ squares and 1/2 yd of background fabric.

I used a layer cake of Twice as Nice by The Quilted Fish for Riley Blake Designs. It is just full of reds and pinks…I set aside the blues for another project. There were 6 reds and 6 pinks in this layer cake. You only need 10, so pick your favorites. I just used all 12 for a little more variety, but I did have some extras afterwards.

IMG_4980

Cut into 1.5″ strips. Toss the teeny bits left over.

IMG_4983

Sew your strips into strip sets of 6 each. Make sure to mix up your strips and press as you go. You will need 10 strip sets.

IMG_4996

Cut a 3.5″ strip and set aside, we are not using this portion. Using a 4.5″ square ruler as your template…center the 45 degree line along the center seam of your strip set.

IMG_4987

Here is a close up of the 45 degree line running along the center seam of your strip set. (That will be between your 3rd and 4th strip)

IMG_4997

Trim along all four sides of your ruler. This is what you should end up with. If you don’t have a 4.5″ ruler, you can use a larger one, but will have to do some rotating.

IMG_5012

Now, this is just the way I did this…so no judging:) Take 4 of your blocks and using your seam ripper, rip out the center seam. Yes, I know….voluntary ripping!

IMG_5014

Using your background fabric, cut (4) 5″squares and (2) 4.5″ squares. Take one of the half blocks that you just separated and line the corner of the block up with the corner of a 5″ background square.

Sew a 1/4″ seam along the edge of the half block, this will be along the same line of stitches you just ripped out.

IMG_5015

Line your stitching up with the 1/4″ line on your ruler and trim the excess. Use the background piece you just trimmed off and repeat for the other half of your block.

IMG_5018

Press the new block open for your pieced HST. You should have 8 of these HST blocks, 6 whole blocks and 2 solid background squares for your layout. All of these blocks finish at 4.5″.

IMG_5023

Here is the layout.

IMG_5029

Cut (2) 4.5″ WOF strips for your borders. Out of one strip sub-cut your right and left borders at 16.5″. Using the other strip sub-cut the top and bottom borders at 24.5″. Add them to your top in that order. Your top is done! Layer up your quilt sandwich and quilt as desired. You will need (2) 2.5″ strips to make your binding.

I  quilted “Feel the Love” using Aurifil 50wt. cotton thread in Light Gray with a basic straight line quilting design.  I finished the binding using this machine binding tutorial.

IMG_5062

Sorry these final pics aren’t all that great…this is what happens when you finish a project in the middle of the night:)
