I am so excited to launch my first Quilt Along here at The Sassy Quilter!

Do you remember this quilt…

Triangle Quilt

Triangle Quilt Along

Lots of you said you really wanted to make a triangle quilt, but just haven’t yet…so, here is your chance:) I’m calling it the Triangle Quilt Along and I have rounded up some awesome sponsors and prizes!

Our Sponsors!

Fort Worth Fabric Studio

It will be a five week process with weekly link ups to share your pics for a chance at prizes, with an awesome Grand Prize at the end with our Triangle Extravaganza!

I want to encourage everyone to join in because you are going to be surprised how easy this quilt is and it not too big so you will have no problem keeping up!!! Remember there are no blocks in a triangle quilt so once you cut them out….you just piece your rows and join them…Easy!

Here is a coloring sheet you can print to help you visualize your quilt.

TriangleLayout

Finished size = 49.5″ x 65″

The winners will be drawn randomly so don’t panic thinking you will never get those points to line up just right. Participation is all that’s required. I will be starting a Flickr group to share your pic and progress and you can link to those. Flickr is free so sign up! If you can’t do that, then email me here: thesassyquilter@gmail.com and I will help you figure it out or even link it up for you:)

When do we start?

Not until March 21st! So you have got plenty of time to get your thoughts and fabrics together.

Schedule

Triangle Quilt Along Announcement and Fabric Requirements- February 14

Official Sign-up and Share Fabric Selection- Week 1, March 21

Cutting- Week 2, March 28

Piecing Rows- Week 3, April 4

Joining Rows- Week 4, April 11

Break week! Giving you some quilting time here:) April 18

Triangle Extravaganza! Week 5, April 25

How much fabric will you need?(go ahead and get these picked out)

Triangles = 1/3 yd cuts of 13 different fabrics. I used 10 prints and 3 solids. You can use as much or as little variety as you like. Just get larger cuts of the same fabric if you want less fabrics in your quilt. For example: You may get 2/3 yds of a particular fabric you want more of and then get only 12 different fabrics. I will warn you that you need exactly 1/3 yd of each, so if you want to be on the safe side you can get 1/2 yd and you will have some extra to add to your scrap bins! As long as your cuts of fabric are generous and give you room to square up the edge, you will be fine. If you want to use Fat Quarters, that would be two of each of the 13 fabrics, 26 in total!

Binding = 1/2 yd

Backing = 3 yds

Do I need a special ruler?

It will be super easy if you use a 60 degree equilateral triangle ruler! It will need to cut a 6″ triangle and that little blunt tip is a life saver. You can find one from Creative Grids HERE, but I will show you how to cut one with your regular rulers too.

Please ask if you have any questions about picking your fabrics!!! I can help with calculations if this is confusing to any beginners…or anyone else:) This is a throw size quilt, if you want to go smaller or larger…we can figure out that too!

Let’s make this fun and get inspired by each other! I would LOVE your support:) Leave a comment letting me know if you are joining in!

Triangle QAL- Last Chance Link Up!

TriangleButton800

Okay guys! I have a little something special for those who participated in the Triangle QAL, but were late to the party and missed the deadline:)  It was my first quilt along and I know I didn’t give everyone(including myself!) a whole lot of time to get the entire quilt done, but no worries!

I am doing a Last Chance Link Up!

sunny_triangle_quilt2

Starting today there will be a link up open on this blog post for everyone that didn’t make the earlier deadline to come and share their finished quilt. Entering the Last Chance Link Up will give you a chance at another prize win!!! The Link Up will remain open until July 31st and the Last Chance winner will be announced August 1st. The winner will be drawn randomly so no pressure to be perfect, just get it done and have fun.

That means you have two more months to get those quilts finished and bound. I hope this is just the extra little inspiration and push you need to not give up and get those sassy triangles done:) What is the prize…..well, that’s a secret! I might share when we get closer so keep plugging away just in case its a brand new car or something….probably definitely not;) But it will be something really cool, I swear!

Sunnyside Triangle Quilt Finish!

TriangleButton800

sunnyside_triangle_quilt

Sunnyside Triangle Quilt by The Sassy Quilter, measures 50 x 64.

Were you wondering why you never got to see my finished triangles from the Triangle Quilt Along???

Well, it got a little crazy sorting through all the final entries that I got a little behind! I also got a new camera and am trying to figure out how to get decent pics….so easy on my trusty iphone.

sunnyside_triangle_quilt4

This quilt finishes at 50″ x 64″. I just loved working with these fun prints in Sunnyside by Kate Spain for Moda. I used a layer cake to cut mine and then added some solids to fill in the gaps.

sunnyside_triangle_quilt2

I quilted along each side of the diagonal seams in a 50wt, 100% cotton Aurifil thread. The color is a light gray that blended perfectly with all these different colors.

sunnyside_triangle_quilt1

For the backing I used a print from the same line.

sunnyside_triangle_quilt3

The back….

sunnyside_triangle_quiltbinding1

I used a Zig Zag stitch for my machine binding technique just to spice things up a bit! I think it is fitting for the triangles.

Actually, the stitch I used is a little more than just a zig zag, this is called an Elastic Stitch on your machine. It takes three stitches in each direction….a little prettier I think.

Keep the seam line in the center of the stitch and you are bound to catch your binding edge on the back of your quilt! This method can be a little more forgiving if you have a hard time keeping it in the ditch.

sunnyside_triangle_quiltbinding2

Here is the backside of the binding.

These labels are by ikaprint and can be designed in a ton of different styles! They really make it simple to get my quilts labeled, especially since I tend to forget that step…..I know, bad quilter!

These adorable labels can be purchased from ikaprint HERE!

ikaprint let me create my own online store with them so the labels are at a discounted price, yay! So click on the link above and have a look around.

Break Week!

Quilting Your Triangle Quilt

Wow guys, You made it! It is finally break week so there will be no link up this week:) You get to have all of this week and the next to get those triangle quilt tops basted and quilted…and if you are behind, Well time to catch up! No worries, you can totally do it:)

Congratulations to Kris@SewSunshine!, last weeks winner! I will contact you so you can get your gift certificate to Pink Chalk Fabrics and your free pattern from Swirly Girls Designs.

I have a guest post today for you from Felicity Quilts to help you figure out how to quilt up your beautiful triangles.

****

Hi there! I’m Felicity and I blog (sporadically) over at Felicity Quilts. I was delighted that Paula asked me to contribute a tutorial to the awesome Triangle Quilt Along that she’s hosting!

Triangle Garden

I recently made a triangle quilt of my own, which is how Paula found me. As is so often the case for me, I wasn’t entirely certain how to quilt the top once it was done. I do have a tutorial on my blog that shows how to use a photo of your quilt top, a vinyl sheet and washable markers to audition quilting designs. But rainy weather here in Vancouver meant that I didn’t have a photo of my quilt top to work with, so I had to find an alternate method. Here’s what I did:

1. I went to the image that Paula has in the kick-off post for the Quilt Along. I right-clicked on the image, selected Copy Image from the menu, then pasted it into a word processing document. I then printed the document 4 times.

2. Using a coloured pencil, I started doodling possible designs. First I tried some straight lines beside the seams:

Straight Line Triangle Quilt Design

OK but seemed like it would take a long time

And then some organic wavy lines:

Organic Triangle Quilt Design
Not feeling it

A curvy S-shaped wave with echoes (I’d seen this design most recently here and loved how it looked):

Wavy Triangle Quilt Design
This one has potential but worried how it would affect all those bias seams

And a spiral:

Spiral Triangle Quilt Design

Yup, this one

3. I chose the design that spoke to me. When I saw it the spiral on my colouring sheet, I just knew it was right choice. As you can see from my finished quilt, I actually did concentric circles, mainly because I didn’t trust myself to be able to execute the beginning of the spiral well enough.

Triangle Garden upward

Print as many copies of the sheet as you want – you could even use regular graphite pencil and erase if you wanted to reuse the same sheet. But just give yourself permission to play. You’ll see very quickly what design work for you.

Happy Quilting!

Felicity

Thanks Felicity! Just a final note here guys to remind you that the next link up will be for finished quilts and the Grand Prizes are a $75 gift certificate to Fat Quarter Shop and a second prize for $50 to Cotton Bliss! So keep pushing and get those tops done:) It will be totally worth it for some fun fabric shopping! Triangle QAL- Joining Rows

TriangleButton800

Week 4

Joining Your Rows

Okay guys! I know this week the pressure was on. Laying out your quilt top and piecing those rows was a little time consuming, but really brings this quilt together quick! If you weren’t able to get them all done….Well, no worries:) The next step is super easy so you will have time to finish your rows and join them together. As a matter of fact, many of you already have and I am so impressed. I even saw a few quilting it up already! Love it:)

Congratulations to Terri van Gulik! She won last weeks sponsor prize from Pink Chalk Fabrics and Swirly Girls Design!

Don’t be to bummed because you have a chance this week to win the same:)

A $25.00 gift certificate to Pink Chalk Fabrics!

and a pattern from Swirly Girls Design!

Now when it comes to joining our rows together our #1 concern is keeping those points on our triangles! I am going to show you a few tips so you don’t chop those off and maybe even get them to line up:)

joinrow2

On the back of your piecing where you can see the stitches, you want to look for where the threads cross and form an “X”.

joinrows2

You will insert a pin from the wrong side of the fabric so that it comes out right at the tip of the triangle on the other side.

joinrows3

Now take the row you are matching it up to and insert the pin at the tip of that triangle.

IMG_6361

Straighten up your pin and smush the two together. If you pressed each row in alternated directions your seams should be going in opposite directions and nest together.

joinrows4

Hold the two pieces together so they don’t shift and secure the tip of the pin to keep that in place. Work your way down each row pinning all the points and then adding one in between.

joinrows5

Sew a 1/4″ seam to join the two rows. When you approach the “X”, sew just to the right of the point where they cross. The “X” is your tip and as long as you are to the right of that you will never chop it off. I could have been just a smidge closer, but this is okay.

joinrows7

and Voila!…

joinrows8

Squaring the Edges

joinrows12

Our left and right edges have some zig zag action going on and you can leave that if you feel up to the challenge of binding it.  Not so bad actually, just use bias binding to give yourself some room to stretch. If you are not feeling ziggy or zaggy….let’s just square up this angular action.

joinrows13

Line up your 1/4″ marking on your ruler just to the right of the points near the end of each row. Trim and continue moving your ruler along the edge of the quilt, making sure to leave a 1/4″ seam.

joinrow3

Here is my finished top! I went with a random layout and even let some touch each other:)

trianglefinishtop

So keep on stitching and come back and link up your finished top by Thursday, April 17th at midnight/EST. If you are behind or have missed a link up don’t let that stop you from linking up. Each link is individual so it doesn’t matter if you didn’t make it to the earlier ones or even if you only do the final one!

Remember: These are finished tops only …nothing is quilted yet! Our next link up will be in 2 weeks so you have plenty of time to get these quilted up.
