Todays Question:

Dear Sassy,

“I had fabric of whites, reds and some other colors. Well the starch spilled and now some of the red color is now on my white fabric, it bled together. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the red stain on my white fabric?”

Why yes there is something you can do!

Fill your tub with hot hot water, add about a half a cup of Dawn dish detergent.

Using the original Dawn is best, no additives or fragrances.

Submerge your entire quilt in the water, keep quilt entirely under water. Let soak for about 12 hours, rinse and repeat as often as necessary!

Bam! There you go. This is a proven technique and works 99.9% of the time.

Sassy tip #107:

Bias or Curved Binding

Use binding cut on the bias when your quilt borders are curved, this has a stretch to it. Otherwise, use straight of grain.

Binding can be a little tricky sometimes. I know you have probably seen some pics of people cutting their binding on the diagonal….why go through all that trouble if you can just cut it straight???

Welllllll………

Fabric has a grain to it. When you cut binding for the straight edges of a quilt, you cut from the fold to the selvedge, you are then cutting on the straight grain. This type of binding is perfect for your general binding on your quilts. It is sturdy and if you pull on it you can feel that it has no stretch.

Butttt……

When you are working with a curved border you need a little stretch or bend to get it to fit around your quilts edges. This is called bias binding because the strips are cut on the bias and give it lots of stretch and movement.

A beautiful scalloped edge adds a unique touch to a quilts edges.

The wedding ring quilt is full of curves!

Bias or curved binding is also used as the main design in some quilts and needs lots of stretch to do what the designer wants it to do.

Churn Dash

Churn Dash Quilt Block

These Churndash blocks are one of my latest projects that I have started. I love this traditional pattern and it has been on my to do list for a long time!

The Churn Dash block is also known by several other names:

Monkey Wrench
Hens and Chickens
Lincoln’s Platform
Shoo Fly
Hole in the Barn Door
Fisherman’s Reel
Broken Plate
Love Knot
Ludlow’s Favorite
Quail’s Nest

My original plan was to make all the blocks the same, that seemed a little boring so I decided to do a reverse block and still keep it a two color quilt.

This is actually a very easy pattern, just some half square triangles and some strips.

I loved this fabric design! It is Add it Up by Cotton and Steel.

I pressed most of the seams to the side, but the two larger seams when finishing the block I pressed open just to reduce some of the bulk. This will help when you get to quilting this quilt. The needle doesn’t love super bulky seams.

This pattern was super easy and so fun to make. I was hesitant about the background fabric I picked… but I think it came out great! The colors really pop.

This is another quilt is from a book dedicated to all things layer cake! I’m slightly obsessed, lol.
