Bella Skill Builder…Finishing

I can’t believe we have finished this quilt along! Seems like we just started. The Bella Skill Builder quilt along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop! Has been a great quilt along. I was very impressed with their quilt kit and each months instructions were perfect. I love that they almost always provided another option if you didn’t have the ruler.

Finishing!!
We made it!
Slow and steady we finished the race… I have to say I really love this quilt.
All the detailed piecing and the fabric choices really came together nicely..
I really pushed myself to get this top quilted! One so I could show you guys and Two… if it ends up the finished tops pile it takes me forever to get to it.
I chose to do and all over stipple design for my quilt. It’s not perfect, but it’s done!
I even remembered to get my tag on there! Love these.
Hope you guys have had a great time following along! I loved seeing all the different color combos people chose.
While this quilt definitely stretched my skills… it was worth it! The finished quilt is stunning!

Quilty Vision Board

Do you have dreams of quilty goodness?

Visions of all the beautiful things you want to make?

Little mementos of quilty happiness?

Well its time for you to make yourself a Quilty Vision Board!

•••

You might also call this an inspiration board…. a collection of all the things that inspire you, excite you and bring a quilty smile to your face.

I have wanted to make one of these for myself forever!!! I was gonna use a cork board… but it was kinda blah. I had some more interesting supplies just laying around and think i came up with a much cuter version.

Supplies Needed:
  • Foam insulation board, however large you wish your Quilty Vision Board to be! If you get a large piece you can also make yourself a movable Design Wall(tutorial for that HERE) and then use the leftovers for this project. That’s what I did.

You can find all different kinds of foam insulation board at your local hardware store.

I bought this at Home Depot for $12. It measures 4′ x 8′ x 1/2″.

It measures about 1/2″ thick. Any similar product that you can stick a pin into will work.

  • Frame… If you want yours to have a frame. You can do this project without it.

I got this one at a thrift store and spray painted it black.

  • Painters tape, wider is better.

I used 2″ painters tape.

  • Stapler, even a mini will do!

Image result for mini stapler

  • Fabric, any kind will do…but a home decor weight fabric is nice.

Home Essentials Print Fabric 45"-Lovely Lattice Raspberry

Home Essentials Print Fabric 45″-Lovely Lattice Raspberry

I used this lovely print found in Joanns Home Decor dept.

Directions:

Measure the inside of your frame where your foam will set, then cut foam accordingly.

Cut your fabric so that you have an extra 5″ on all sides.  You need enough to fold to the backside.

Fold around all four sides and staple to the foam. Miter the corners to keep things looking smooth.

Use the painters tape to tape down the inner edges. This will keep it secure.

Make sure if your fabric is patterned that you keep things lined up straight when you are wrapping the fabric onto the foam board.

Set the foam into the back of the frame and secure in place with another round of painters tape.

Then flip over your masterpiece and hang in your sewing room!

I absolutely love mine!

My fabric matches my ironing board cover, so It really brings my sewing room together.

Now get to pining all your quilty inspiration! (I just used some cute sewing pins for mine)

I have some patterns up there, my fair ribbons, my quiltcon badges, cute quilty sayings… all kinds of fun stuff. I add to it all the time….can you tell I am short and can’t reach the top, lol!!!

Hope to see some of these you guys make, so please share!

Bella Skill Builder…Block 8

Her we are… Block 8 in the Bella Skill Builder quilt along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop!

Bella Skill Builder
Block 8
Starburst

This block will require a specialty ruler or you will have to create a template for yourself. Either will work just fine!

Creative Grids Ruler - Starburst 30 degree Triangle

Creative Grids Starburst 30 Degree Triangle Ruler

I chose to make a template. The pattern comes with one for you to trace… grab some thin template plastic and trace/cut it out. Ignore the lines I drew on mine… I was just using them as a guide.

I stacked up my fabric and then drew my template on the top layer. Then I used an acrylic ruler as a guide along the traced lines to cut with my rotary cutter… made it a little faster.

So here’s the thing with sewing pieces that all converge in the center….

It creates bulk!

….and a lot of bias edges that stretch a little on ya!

I try to be as careful as I can, go slow…pin a little, but I still get a little “teepee” effect in the center.

Smushing with the iron is an option, but not ideal.

I fudged my seams a little to avoid too much puckering… lost a few points….but in the end its OK!

This one came out flatter… not perfect, but none are.

In the end, no one notices this stuff in your quilts.

This is definitely an area for me to keep on Skill Building.

Hope you guys are having fun! We are almost done, yay!

Bella Skill Builder
Block 7

Half Square and Quarter Square Triangles

You can find the Half Square 4 in 1 Ruler HERE and the 4.5″ Quilting Square Ruler HERE.

Both of these are very helpful for these blocks and a great addition to your ruler stash!

These are the Quarter Square triangles for one of this months block. I though I would show you guys the technique for piecing these little boogers!

You start with your two squares right sides together… draw a diagonal line and then stitch 1/4″ on both sides of the line.

Cut on the drawn line… and press open your two beautiful half square triangles.

Line up these two with right sides of fabric together and opposite colors of fabric together.

Draw another diagonal line from corner to corner…

Stitch 1/4″ on both sides of the line and then cut on the drawn line.

When you press these open you will have these two beauties!

Do a little squaring up using your ruler and Voila….

all done!

Bella Skill Builder…Block 6

Moving along my quilty friends with Block 6 in the Bella Skill Builder quilt along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop!

Bella Skill Builder
Block 6

Courthouse Steps

This months block is Courthouse Steps.

This is another classic block… and another I have never made before!

Image result for log cabin trim tool two

I used the 12″ Creative Grids Log Cabin Trim Tool Two ruler, which also does Courthouse Steps. It will help you create perfect 6″ and 12″ finished Log Cabin, Half Log Cabin, or Courthouse Steps blocks.

You can find this ruler HERE on the Fat Quarter Shop website. This ruler has quite a few uses and I think will be money well spent!

This was a fun block… I just kept working my way around and everything went really smooth. Just enough fabric to trim so everything comes out square, yes!

I am loving trying all these new blocks without having to make 100 of each and these new rulers are pretty awesome!

Enjoy Sassy’s!

Wild Goose Chase…

Classic & Vintage: Wild Goose Chase

Hey there quilty peoples!

Be sure to check out this really cool pattern over at Fat Quarter Shop….

Wild Goose Chase

It’s part of their Classic and Vintage block series. I love these blocks!

This one was fun to make and features their  flying geese paper by Triangles on a Roll.

I had never tried the flying geese style of the triangles on a roll….

Image result for triangle on a roll flying geese

My first go at it was a little tricky…. but they have a you tube video to help !

I found that if I pinned as I went, everything stayed much flatter. It was smooth sailing from there.

The paper is nice and thin and your stitches perforate it nicely! Tears off like a dream. Just remember to shorten your stitch length.

There are lots of ways to make a flying geese unit, so it is at least worth giving it a try. The big plus to this method is that the units are already connected and the points come out perfect!

You know we like that!

You can even get a quilt kit HERE to make this one…

If you are not feeling a whole quilt… just give a block a try.  It finishes at 17″…a nice size and would be great for a sampler quilt.

Bella Skill Builder…Block 5

Her we are… Block 5 in the Bella Skill Builder quilt along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop!

Bella Skill Builder
Block 5
Half Square Triangle

Another classic block in the world of quilting…. simple, yet the options are truly endless!

There are also lots of ways to put these bad boys together….

This pattern recommends using Triangles on a Roll…. you can find these at Fat Quarter Shop HERE.

I do have to admit I love these! The process is easy and each unit comes out perfect!!!

There are a ton in this roll… you just cut off how many you need and layer them together with your two fabrics facing each other. A couple pins to secure your paper to the fabrics is perfect.

The instructions are right on there too, genius!

Then just stitch along the dotted lines following the arrows. Shorten your stitch length so the paper is easy to tear off when you’re done.

Cut on the solid lines, tear off your paper and… Voila! Perfect Half square triangles…. trim the little dog ears if you like!

Then just sew them together according to the pattern…

Done!

We are getting there Sassies! This quilt is moving right along… here’s a pic of mine all together.

Bella Skill Builder…Block 4

We are moving along folks! This week is Block 4  in the Bella Skill Builder quilt along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop!

Bella Skill Builder
Block 4
Flying Geese

img_7356

I love Flying Geese!

Such a classic block with a modern feel.

This pattern uses a method you may not have used before…. There are lots and lots of different ways to make a flying geese unit.

img_7344

First they have you make these units. You will need the instructions to get this part done. I call this the Eleanor Burns method because it is where I first learned it and she has a special ruler for trimming them that you will need.

You can get this ruler HERE. They have all the lines for lining it up and is super easy to do. I also love a pattern with a little extra so I can get a perfect unit when I am done.

img_7349

Here are your two little perfect geese babies!

You will make three of these 4 geese units.

Have fun with these guys.

Needle Turn Applique…Part 2

Lets start stitching!
If you missed it…

Here is the Intro to Needle Turn Applique post to help you get ready to start stitching.

Here is where we left off….

Our block is pin basted and ready to start stitching the orange peel down.

You want to start by finger pressing along your drawn on line…

this helps your fabric go the way you want it to. Just give it a squeeze for a second and it will make the crease.

Once you thread your needle and knot the end, bring your needle up along the curved side of the orange peel… right on the line.   The knot will be hidden in the fold.

Only use 18-20″ of thread… if its too long, it will just keep getting knotted up. These pieces are small so you should be able to get all the way around with out starting a new thread!

You also always want to start along the long edge of something you are appliqueing… it’s easier and it looks nicer. Never start at a point!

Fold your fabric under along the line…. I use my thumb to keep an inch or so ahead of me pressed under.

Then, insert your needle just under the fold through the background fabric.

Bring your needle up, about 1/8″ to 1/4″ at the most along the fold. You want to just barely catch the edge of the fold here… this will hide your stitches.

Work your way along the curve… it should look something like this.

When you approach the point… bring your needle up at the very tip.

Now take a stitch right in the point to secure it.

Using your needle tip and your thumb… fold on the line and tuck the seam allowance underneath the tip.

Insert your needle at the tip and continue your normal stitching along the side.

You will work your way around another point and then run into where you started. Here you will take a stitch or two in place and then knot it off on the back.

Here is the backside…

BAM!

Orange peel done.

These are a great starter project.  Not too big or complicated.

So give it a try.

I have a whole pile of these done and can’t wait to show you guys what I come up with.
