Aviatrix Medallion Progress

Aviatrix Medallion

Slowly but surely my Aviatrix Medallion Quilt is moving along!

So hard to get good quilt pics this time of year, dark in the morning and dark when I get home. I had to take this to work and get my coworker to help me out in between patients at the dental office. You can tell by her expression she wasn’t prepped for the quilt pic process…..I was like, let me know when you feel like your arms are going to fall off:) Hey, it’s not easy being a quilters assistant!

I have had these X plus blocks done, but couldn’t seem to get them together….I love, love, love these blocks! My favorite so far. Next is the Log Cabin border….I have those all done too. What’s up with me lately….can’t seem to get my sewjo working. I am making progress though so it’s all good! Right now I am at that part where you wonder if you REALLY need all these borders, haha….NO, I will finish this! I am trying to remember that I am suppose to be taking my time and enjoying the process, but rush, rush, rush is always buzzing in the back of my brain.

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying my Sassy Saturday Giveaways! There is still time for this weeks giveaway, it ends tonight at midnight so click on over and enter for a yummy $35 gift certificate from Fat Quarter Shop….easy entry I promise!

X-Plus and a bonus tip!

X-Plus quilt block

I have been working on my X-Plus blocks for my next border in my Aviatrix Medallion quilt…..don’t you just love these blocks! This is one reason I really wanted to make this quilt. I just love these blocks and wanted to get a feel for making them. Quite a few pieces, but not so hard. I can’t wait to show you all of these finished up…all these solids really look great together.

I am pretty much following Elizabeth Hartman’s pattern for all the different solids(bought a kit), she coordinated these so well! I am switching up my white background for this sketchy print and the gray for a gray polka dot…to spice it up a bit and make it my own. Here is Elizabeth’s original quilt:

Flat Shot

It’s a biggie, too 80 x 80. Check out the #aviatrixmedallion to see all the cool different ways people have put this one together.

You can purchase the pattern HERE or join in the quilt along if you are interested.

Bonus tip…

You may have heard of this one before, but here goes:)

For the corner units of this block you have you sew squares on the diagonal, then trim the corner off and press it open.

If while you are doing this you go ahead and stitch another line about 1/2″ away…(toward the outer corner!!!) and then cut between the two lines of stitches….

bonus hst

You will get these lovely little bonus half square triangles! and Yes….they are tiny:) About 1″ or so.  I love saving these and plan to make some little fun projects like fridge magnets or christmas ornments with them.

I always stitch these up and then toss them in a jar until I am ready to use them. To cut triangles this small and try to feed them through your machine is a little tough, but this is a simple quick way to  just pop ’em out.

bonus hst

This will work for any type of block where you are stitching the square on the diagonal and then trimming it off….other examples would be in Flying Geese and Snowball techniques.

I just love all these solid and can’t stand to just toss these little cuties!

Aviatrix Medallion- Center Complete

aviatrix_medallion_center

Aviatrix Medallion

I was so excited this weekend to have some vacation time so I could finish the cutting for my Aviatrix Medallion Quilt! It is a pretty busy pattern so there is plenty of cutting to do and I usually like to do all the cutting first. Then I feel like I’m ready to roll!

Do you do all your cutting first or cut as you go?

I love using these Sterlite containers for keeping my active projects together and they are easy to grab and go if I want to work on it at a friends house or at my guild. You can find these at Dollar General Stores.

They have nice locking handles and stack well….no sliding around. Yeah, I have probably have too many of these!

Look at the back of this thing…..so many seams! The pattern recommended pressing open and it definitely helped to keep everything laying flat. I have never sewn diamonds together before. Let me say pinning was a MUST! The diamonds are small and stretchy from bias edges. Pinning and some starching really made the difference.

My Aviatrix Medallion is part of a quilt along and pattern by Elizabeth Hartman. Here is her beautiful quilt.

See, I told you it was lots of cutting:) I tried to mix it up a bit by switching up my background fabrics. Hope this comes out how I imagined it:) If you want to see lots of different versions coming together, check out #aviatrixmedallion on Instagram.

Now on to Border 1!

Aviatrix Medallion Quilt Along

Well, it has been super busy over here guys and I am sorry I dropped off the map for a bit. Unfortunately I had a death in the family this past weekend and just as I was getting ready to post this…..earthquake last night!!! Crazy and needless to say my internet crashed. Now, that is a regular occurrence out in the sticks where I live:) but I am going to blame it on the earthquake since the epicenter was about 10 miles from me. This was my third earthquake and I will be happy to never experience another. No damage or anything, but…..freaks me out for like a month! Every time the heat pump cuts on I think its an aftershock:)

Well, I did it….

I signed up to participate in the Aviatrix Medallion Quilt Along! Some of my friends from my local MQG lured me in on this one. I just couldn’t resist. You d0 as many borders as you like and if you do them all you have a queen size quilt. I am a little nervous about the center medallion….diamonds! Click on the link or pic to jump over to Oh, Frannson! if you want to join in. You do have to buy the pattern.

Here are my yummy fabrics! I am using the larger pieces for my backgrounds.

I am an official MQG member! Yay.

My guild also is doing a block of the month where you use several modern elements to re-create a traditional block. I haven’t ventured to far out of the box yet, but I do love these fabrics. They are Twenty Three by Cosmo Cricket for Moda.
