Memory Quilt

Memory Quilt

Memory Quilt

Well, I finally have made some progress on my latest commissioned Memory Quilt!

I decided to attack this project with simplicity. I think most people that want a quilt made are thinking of a handmade patchwork feel and not a quilt masterpiece….especially if they don’t give you any direction at all in regard to the design…..or at least that’s what I am hoping:) It took me quite a while to decide on this and finally just started cutting! I feel like I have been just holding on to this bag of clothes for months….I don’t know about you guys, but this whole timeline thing is probably the one thing I actually do not love about making quilts for others. I always feel like I keep them waiting SO long! Oh well….that is my process I guess:) I have to really think about it and wait until it speaks to me.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Memory Quilt

In my previous post I talked to you guys about how I just spent some time looking over the clothes, analyzing the fabric and how much useable material I had to work with. These clothes really struck me as so personal and I could feel all the love inside them…..I think that made them harder to cut up!

My next step was to pull a few fabrics that I thought coordinated with the general feel of all the clothes. The person who I am making it for told me her favorite was a country blue. I picked a couple different shades and added a similar style yellow for some extra pop!

Memory Quilt

I pressed all the shirts, cut out all the large flat areas, and then subcut them into 4.5″ x 8″ rectangles. I laid them out on my design wall with staggered rows so that the seams would alternate. After sewing everything together I trimmed the edges so they were square.

memoryquilt_layout

I hope they are going to like this quilt!

Memory Quilt

Ahhh……a little summer breeze:) Not great for picture taking, but beautiful none the less!

Now…..should I add a border??? Hmmmm…..what do you think? I have plenty of the blues and yellow left over.

Jelly Roll Jam II and a GIVEAWAY!

Fat Quarter Shop has another fabulous shortcut quilt for you guys today!

Jelly Roll Jam II

Guess what? This pattern is so quick and easy it is a must do for your quilty list! If you are like me you probably have a stack of jelly rolls setting around dying to become an actual quilt:) Two things I love…..the pattern is FREE and it will make you TWO quilts!!!

Into the Woods by Lella Boutique

I used one of my newer jelly rolls, Into the Woods by Lella Boutique for Moda, you can get one of these cute little jelly rolls HERE.

20140818-164301.jpg

Jelly Rolls 10% off at Fat Quarter Shop through Aug. 24, 11:59p.m./CST!

Since the Jelly Roll Jam II pattern makes two quilts I decided to separate mine into two color ways…..Light and Dark. This gave me some pretty combos of pink/green and a red/brown.

Into the Woods by Lella Boutique

This quilt goes together quick! Seriously…..one quilt can be done start to finish in a day, love that!

Jelly Roll Jam II, The Sassy Quilter

Take 1

The Red/Brown color combo is a different one for me, but I really liked it! I love the hint of mint mixed in there.

Jelly Roll Jam II, The Sassy Quilter

Jelly Roll Jam II, The Sassy Quilter

I tried something totally different for the quilting on this one…..a wood grain design. I really just free-styled it using some organic wavy lines and adding a swirl for the knot in the wood. To fill in around I just echoed around the knot. This design is pretty forgiving…..trees are kind of gnarly anyway, right! So go for it and give it a try.

Jelly Roll Jam II, The Sassy Quilter

I used a solid on the back so you can really see the quilting.

Take 2

Jelly Roll Jam II, The Sassy Quilter

Didn’t this one come out so soft and sweet??? Pink and Green is one of my favorite color combos!

Jelly Roll Jam II, The Sassy Quilter

As always I used my custom made labels from ikaprint! You can make your own HERE, easy and inexpensive.

For my quilting I used an allover stipple or meander, but kept it large so my quilt would still feel soft and cozy:)

Jelly Roll Jam II, The Sassy Quilter

These quilts finish at 36.5″ x 38.5″….great baby quilts. I suppose you could put all the blocks together and make a throw size quilt.

Jelly Roll Jam II, The Sassy Quilter

Even though I kind of separated this jelly roll…..they sure do look good together too!

Around the World Blog Hop

What is the Around the World Blog Hop?

Well, lets think of it as a quilty chain letter! I was invited to join in by Keera who blogs over at Live.Love.Sew in gorgeous Austrailia, and now I will be tagging three other bloggers who inspire ME! Now sometime next week these guys will all do the same…..and the chain keeps going!

How fun, right?!

What I am suppose to do in this post is introduce myself and then answer a few questions about my process, easy enough…or so I thought. These questions were quite thought provoking. I apologize if you are tired of hearing about me this week…its the last for a while:)

Before I go on I just have to give a big Thank You to Keera and tell you to go check out her latest FREE quilt pattern and tutorial……GORGEOUS I tell ya!

IMG_6969Charmed a free pattern and tutorial by Keera @ Live Love Sew

Introduction:  Who is The Sassy Quilter?

(haha, did that sound all serious and like I was looking off into the distance???)

I am a dental hygienist by day and quilter by night, weekend and sometimes even my lunch breaks! If you follow me often, you know I learned how to quilt from my grandmother whose nick name was “Sassy” and was to be honest….far more sassy than me:) She was a hand quilter, so that is how I first learned to quilt. Now I mostly machine quilt. I do all my quilting on my domestic machine which is a Baby Lock Crescendo. I did a serious upgrade almost 2 years ago and haven’t regretted it since. Getting all that extra throat space makes quilting my quilts so much easier and has inspired me to really work on my free motion quilting skills.

1.      What am I working on?

My current project is my Aviatrix Medallion Quilt! I am up to border #3 and loving the way it is coming together.

Aviatrix Medallion, Border 2

2.      How does my work differ from others in its genre?

Whoa! This question really made me think…. I am not sure if I differ! I think maybe some of you guys could answer that one better than me:) I started this blog with an emphasis on beginners and keeping things simple so others could be inspired and successful in learning to quilt. I try to have lots of FREE patterns and tutorials for beginners and have done a beginner quilting series called, So You Wanna Make a Quilt. I also like to share lots of tips and tricks that I was happy to learn when I began quilting and am always adding ones I continue to learn along the way.

3.      Why do I write/create what I do?

This is another deep question….I honestly feel like it completes me! Some might say I need to get a life, but I know you guys understand:) It is not just the art of quilting, but the community and inspiration that is shared that is so fulfilling! From the creativity of designing a project to the touch, feel and sight of the fabric with its vibrant colors and design to the physical construction and finishing…..and don’t even get me started about the emotion and heart shared in giving and receiving quilts!

Hey quilting is even good for your health. Here is a quote from an article in the Journal of Public Health:

“Cognitive, emotional and social processes were uncovered, which participants identified as important for their wellbeing. Participants found quilting to be a productive use of time and an accessible means of engaging in free creativity. Colour was psychologically uplifting. Quilting was challenging, demanded concentration and participants maintained and learned new skills. Participants experienced ‘flow’ while quilting. A strong social network fostered the formation of strong friendships. Affirmation from others boosted self-esteem and increased motivation for skill development. Quilts were often given altruistically and gave quilting added purpose.”

Hey! We already knew this:)

4.      How does my writing/creating process work?

I am a pencil and paper kind of gal. I have to sketch it out a bit to get my thoughts sorted out first. Now that I have EQ7(a quilt design program for your computer), I am learning to design my projects there. It is pretty cool to import your actual fabrics and see what your  quilt will look like before you ever cut! I have a lot to learn with this program so sometimes I feel like I can sketch it out faster in pencil and I can take that anywhere. Here are some of my random scribbles…

More often than not color or fabric inspires me! I see a combination or a fabric line and then I say, “What can I make with this?”. The pattern or quilt is just a way to bring it to life for me. That being said….I do sometimes see a really great pattern and its a good excuse to put some of this fabric I am hoarding to use!

Above all my biggest inspirations are other quilters!!!

Let me introduce you to a few from around the world…

Stephanie @ Dawn Chorus Studios

Stephie is a gifted artist and writer who I came across shortly after I started blogging. I love following her quilting blog and her Facebook page. She really gives you a peak into her world through anything from her running adventures to her artwork….amazing by the way! Her quilting blog has some fabulous free patterns and I love how she adds lots of hand stitching to her work.

Cheryl @ Texas Quilting Gal

I have had the pleasure of knowing Cheryl since she started blogging and love her eye for color and enthusiasm to try new things! Being a Texan, she is having fun quilting along with the Deep in the Heart of Texas Roadtrip QAL….this looks like such a fun project! Makes you wish you were from Texas:) You never know what she will be into next…we often end up doing lots of the same projects or joining the same quilt alongs.

Julie @ 627Handworks

Julie, Julie, Julie! I found Julie’s blog when I started blogging and just loved her look and style! She always has such fun projects and tutorials to share….especially her Block Rockin’ Series of free paper pieced patterns. Even though I wasn’t making these I couldn’t wait to see what she came up with next:) I am currently taking part in her Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt Bee. I just love getting to make these scrappy blocks and getting to swap with quilty friends from all over the world. Julie always has something fun and exciting up her sleeve!

So go ahead and check these guys out! I promise you won’t be sorry:)

Fat Quarter Style Book Tour and a Giveaway!

Fat Quarter Style Book Tour

Welcome to my stop on the Fat Quarter Style Book Tour!

Fat Quarter Style is the latest book by Fat Quarter Shop’s pattern company, It’s Sew Emma. Fat Quarter Style has 12 fat quarter quilts with 4 size options each….love that! I also really liked that it includes both traditional and modern pattern styles.  All super cute! For the book tour each blogger was assigned one of the quilts and we are featuring a block from that quilt. Mine was the pattern, Mosaic, and let me tell you this block was so quick and easy I just decided to go ahead whip up the crib size quilt!

Mosaic

Mosaic Quilt

This pattern only required 9 fat quarters and I paired them with a light grey solid(Kona Silver). It was fun to just pull these fat quarters from my stash! I most often using a collection of some sort.

Mosaic Quilt

I quilted it using an Aurifil, 50 wt. cotton in a light grey(#2600).  I decided to free motion quilting a meander or stipple within the blocks….

Mosaic FMQ

and a loop-de-loop design in the sashing and borders.

Quilt Labels

For my binding I pieced together the leftovers and used THIS machine binding tutorial. I finished it off with one of my custom made labels which you can have made HERE, super affordable and cute!

I’ve got my eye on a few others in here and can’t wait to get started. Maybe I can use up some of this stash that keeps eyeballing me!
