Star Surround Quilt-A-Long

Wow, didn’t this go by quick? Feels like I just started this quilt!

I have to say there was just so much excitement with this project for me. I love the block and really liked the goal oriented tasks each week. It also didn’t hurt that there was a chance at winning a prize each week either!

The last task is to get the blocks and top assembled and link up with Melissa@HappyQuilting.  Melissa has been a fabulous host and has had great tutorials to go along with each step. Thanks a bunch Melissa for all your kind words and encouragement along the way:)

There will be four Grand Prize Winners for some 75.00 gift certificates to either Intrepid Thread or Fat Quarter Shop. I hope I haven’t used up all my winning mojo, because I would love to have a little spending spree:)

What would I do differently???

Well, I like my fabrics okay, but would rather have used something a little more bright and fun. My goal was to use some things I have from my stash(that is overflowing). This was a yellow bundle I bought at a quilt show several years ago. I wasn’t as picky then about fabrics and some of these are sooooo thin(poor quality), but oh well. Still a nice palette and a sweet traditional feel. Since it is a baby quilt I think it will suit nicely.

Secondly, nothing! I really loved the pattern and think I might just make another with a bright yellow/gray palette in the one large block design:)

Wish me luck!

Keep it Sassy

  1. Paula, your top is absolutely stunning!!! Your points are all so perfect!! I love the soft pale yellows, so pretty and calming!! I am so glad that you enjoyed the QAL, that is why I love hosting them so much :) It was so fun to see your progress along the way and you have a stunning finish to show for all your hard work. Absolutely beautiful!!!

  2. Wow, looks fantastic! Perfect for a baby!
Your center star is my fave, love the stripes with the dots.

  3. This is really beautiful. Your layout is perfect. Any baby will be blessed to have this quilt!

  4. Looks gorgeous! Such a soft and sweet colour palette.

  5. I actually really like these yellows. I think they are very dreamy-sweet! What color do you think you will use to bind it?

  6. This turned out beautifully! I think your layout is just right, it really balances the whole quilt. I was so excited to see how your palette turned out, and I think it’s wonderful. I’m sure it will also be gorgeous in the brighter colours, but I think the soft yellows are so perfect for babies. Can’t wait to see it all quilted up! :^)

  7. Beautiful colors! I think the colors are perfect. My last few quilts have been bright and this makes me want to tone one down again. The stripe fabric in the center is my favorite :D

  8. Paula, this is looking great! I think you balanced out the placement of the muted and more saturated blocks really well. I think this is a perfect pattern candidate for a gray and yellow combo too — well, what pattern isn’t :-) Do it! The one block version is fun (well, mine is messed up right now, but it’ll get there)

  9. It looks great. Love that sunny yellow! I have just a couple more seams and my top is finished. I love this pattern too! As soon as I get some of the scrappy mess out of my sewing room, I hope to get mine done and posted. Great job!!

  10. love, love, LOVE this Paula! See, there was NO doubt that you would whip this fabulous top out!

    :) Kelly

  11. Looks fantastic! I love the happy yellows and what a lucky baby to get such a wonderful quilt! I just finished quilting mine tonight and made my binding. Eek! I’m excited for the parade next week. Oh, and I need some of that mojo too!

  12. Melissa is a fabulous host. This is the second QAL I’ve done with her and I can’t wait to do more. I love this quilt. The colors are very old feeling, very antique. And once it gets quilted and bound the thin fabrics won’t be as big of a deal I’m sure. Love it!

  13. wow! that came together fast. I think it is lovely and will be pop awesome in the new colors!

  14. love your quilt, you say the colours are a little bland but I think they are rather tranquil and as it is for a baby maybe the baby will become tranquil too at bedtime! It would look good done in allsorts of colours. Goigt to check out Melissa and see what I have been missing.

  15. It’s beautiful!! And once it is quilted the thinner fabric won’t be noticeable!! Great job!! You can always do the pattern over with fabric that excites you, because this pattern is amazing!

  16. I actually really like the colors you went with. It’s so soft and pretty. Whoever is on the receiving end of this one is truly lucky :)

  17. You know, I like the subdued feeling. It’s calm and pretty and would go well in a room that already has enough other exciting things going on!

  18. What a beautiful swoon, Paula! I love the low volume feel you have brought to this design. It has a real classy look. Congrats on such a sweet finished top!

  19. Not my favoute colors but they look so nice together and it makes it a beautiful quilt! The design made me closely look at all the stars. Look forward to see the finished quilt!

  20. What a lovely quilt …..it is such a beautiful pattern.. Thanks for sharing.

Paula you did beautiful work on this quilt and your color choices are excellent.

  22. I just love it too Paula! Great job! Unfortunately I have a large amount of thin fabric that I purchased before I started shopping online to get the good stuff! (no local quilt shops) So they just sit there, but I finally found a use – I think I am going to use them for the blankies I make for the animal shelter and just quilt them really dense. If they get torn up by puppies and kittens that would be better than my good stuff. I think a yellow and gray quilt would be very pretty! And keeping my fingers crossed you win that gift certificate!

  23. OOOH lovely!! And I love those colors! I am super partial to yellows and oranges :) How long did that take you?

  24. funny you say that about changing the fabrics because I was thinking, “what a nice low-volume palette!” it’s all the rage, you know. =) I think it’s just fabulous the way it is. bet it feels great to have dug into your stash, too. (not that i’d know – I don’t do that often.)

  25. Paula this is beautiful! I love the fabrics! I’m sure you will cherish it for years to come….

  26. Beautiful quilt! Love your choices of fabric! Congrat on a job well done!

  27. I just love your quilt! I have been watching this QAL from a distance and I’m a little jealous! I hope you’re one of the lucky winners!

  28. I love this! So pretty and your points are perfection :)

  29. Your quilt is fabulous and I enjoy the soft soothing colors. The yellow pallet is suitable for any age and I may try those colors now that I’ve seen yours. I hope you win. You certainly did a wonderful job.
