X-Plus and a bonus tip!

X-Plus quilt block

I have been working on my X-Plus blocks for my next border in my Aviatrix Medallion quilt…..don’t you just love these blocks! This is one reason I really wanted to make this quilt. I just love these blocks and wanted to get a feel for making them. Quite a few pieces, but not so hard. I can’t wait to show you all of these finished up…all these solids really look great together.

I am pretty much following Elizabeth Hartman’s pattern for all the different solids(bought a kit), she coordinated these so well! I am switching up my white background for this sketchy print and the gray for a gray polka dot…to spice it up a bit and make it my own. Here is Elizabeth’s original quilt:

Flat Shot

It’s a biggie, too 80 x 80. Check out the #aviatrixmedallion to see all the cool different ways people have put this one together.

You can purchase the pattern HERE or join in the quilt along if you are interested.

Bonus tip…

You may have heard of this one before, but here goes:)

For the corner units of this block you have you sew squares on the diagonal, then trim the corner off and press it open.

If while you are doing this you go ahead and stitch another line about 1/2″ away…(toward the outer corner!!!) and then cut between the two lines of stitches….

bonus hst

You will get these lovely little bonus half square triangles! and Yes….they are tiny:) About 1″ or so.  I love saving these and plan to make some little fun projects like fridge magnets or christmas ornments with them.

I always stitch these up and then toss them in a jar until I am ready to use them. To cut triangles this small and try to feed them through your machine is a little tough, but this is a simple quick way to  just pop ’em out.

bonus hst

This will work for any type of block where you are stitching the square on the diagonal and then trimming it off….other examples would be in Flying Geese and Snowball techniques.

I just love all these solid and can’t stand to just toss these little cuties!

Hexagons and a winner!

Sunny with a chance of Hex

Hope everyone had a great weekend! I got to meet with my guild girls and work on some hexagons. For some it was there first time, so that was fun! I have to say my fingers haven’t done any hand stitching in a while and my thumb was sore!!! A thimble would probably help, but I find them too bulky. Just have to toughen up those quilting fingers:)

We did the two April blocks following along with the 2012 Craftsy BOM. You can find the FREE class HERE!

Lesson Learned….don’t use red paper for your templates! When I starched and pressed them there was just a slight bit of bleeding through the fabric.

HERE is an awesome site to print off as many FREE hexagons, triangles, graph paper, etc.! Super easy to use, just plug in any size you need and print it out.

2000 and Sassy…

IMG_4392

As we turn the page I realize that 2013 has been amazing and definitely Sassy!

On April 1st, I dove head-first into blogland and published my first post here at The Sassy Quilter. I began by paying homage to my Grandmother and teacher(her nickname was “Sassy”, the original) and my very first quilt that I finished with her six years ago. You can read all about it here in My Quilt Story.

Every day since has been packed full of quilty goodness and I am loving every minute of it! My quilty universe is ever expanding with new things to learn, quilts to make, friends to meet, fabric to buy(of course) and the inspiration from my fellow bloggers is never ending.

Here is a 2013 Sassy review:

Star Surround- Flying Geese

IMG_2793

This weeks homework for the Star Surround Quilt Along, with Melissa@Happy Quilting, was Flying Geese and lots of them. She has a great tutorial for making the flying geese units. There are several ways to make a flying geese unit, three that I know of. I had heard of this method, but had never tried it. I have to say it may be a favorite. Making them seemed to wiz by.

IMG_2786

I even got to try out a special tool I bought for squaring up these things. I got it at a quilt show I went to in February. It is called a Bloc-Loc Flying Geese Ruler. There are channels that the quarter-inch seams fit snugly into, this “locks” the unit into the ruler(no slipping at all!) and you can just zip your rotary cutter around it. It eliminates the time spent on each unit lining up the tip of the goose to make sure you have a quarter-inch seam area, making sure all other sides are correct and then doing it again for the opposite sides. I give this product an A+++.

IMG_2780 IMG_2778

Last weeks homework was half square triangles and I also have a Bloc-Loc Ruler for half square triangles. This ruler works well for multiple sized units, so you still have to line up some numbers, but not the center on the diagonal seam. The flying geese ruler is only for units 2 x 4, which is the most used sized unit. They sell all kinds of these, so check them out: www.blocloc.com.

Don’t forget Melissa has a Flickr group for sharing your progress and maybe even winning some prizes if you link up! I also have an open  Flickr group for all my own bloggy friends following along just so I don’t lose track of you:)

Block 3

Block 3- Virtual Quilting Bee

Block 3- The Virtual Quilting Bee

For a detailed tutorial check out April Rosenthal of Prarie Grass Patterns…..this is her block for the Virtual Quilting Bee. For more info on the Virtual Quilting Bee(and links to each block tutorial) visit Amy@Diary of a Quilter, she is hosting this quilt along. I hope some of you guys will join in with us. I promise its easy!

I really liked this block. It was pretty easy and I loved the color combo.

If you look close  you can see it is just 4- HST’s(half square triangles). One half of the HST is pieced.

IMG_1668

I love patterns for blocks where you just cut the squares on a diagonal to get the triangles! Makes it even easier. The green and white ones are cut that way.

           IMG_1746 IMG_1747

So cut your triangles and add to the sides of the orange square, the put your HST together!

IMG_1758

Carefully press open toward the solid half of your HST.

             IMG_1760  IMG_1761

The goal with this part(if you are trying to be picky!) is to have the point of your orange square precisely touch the seam. Try not to cut it off or have a gap between the two. If you are off just a little…no big deal:) Square up your finished blocks to 4.5″ and then put ’em together.
