I Love Quilting Because…

National Quilting Month

Today is my stop on Fat Quarter Shops National Sewing & Quilting Month Blog Tour!

Fat Quarter Shop asked me to share why I LOVE Quilting, answer a few questions about my quilting experience and tackle a project I have never done before.

So here  goes…

National Sewing and Quilting Month

How did you start quilting/sewing?
I grew up knowing how to use a sewing machine, but when I was 16 I asked my grandmother, “Sassy”, to teach me how to quilt. I started my first quilt, a Virginia Reel or Monkey Wrench pattern, but never got past finishing the quilt top.

When was the first time you knew that you were a quilter/sewer?
When I was 29 I made a list of a few things I would do or finish before I turned 30! Finishing my first quilt was one of them:) So, I dug out my first quilt and went back to Grandma Sassy and we got it done! That was it for me, I knew I was officially a quilter. I loved how it used every part of me♥

Do you have any sewing/quilting horror stories or faux pas?
Hmmm… does sewing or cutting every block of an entire quilt wrong count! But, hey…this is how new patterns are made:)

What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting out in sewing/quilting?
Don’t take everything so seriously! Let yourself learn and give yourself time to perfect your skills. My favorite quilts from my Grandma Sassy are the wonkiest:) She always said that’s how you know it isn’t store bought!

Now what did I tackle that was completely new for me???

I am ashamed to admit I have never sewn a zipper into a project, EVER! If I can find a way to get around it…I do:) So this was just the shove I needed to get out of my box and just do it.

Way back when, I started creating these cute little sewing bags and did the applique and quilting for all the parts……and then……nothing!

So here it is! I actually finished one of the zipper pouches and guess what?

Phew! Not as scary as I thought:) Lindsey of Inspiring Creations compiled a list of 12 different zipper pouch tutorials I used to help me out, check it out HERE.

What are you going to try new this month? Come on, don’t leave me here outside of the box by myself! There is a lot of room out here and like me you might just like it:)

I would love you to leave a comment telling me what you are dying to try, but just haven’t yet!!!

Don’t forget!!! Fat Quarter Shop has created this FREE Color My Heart Quilt Pattern for you!

It makes a HUGE block – 27″ finished! The Color My Heart Pattern is a perfect place for beginnings to start! (Don’t forget to use #colormyheart on social media when you create and share this quilt!)

  1. I made one baby quilt 9 years ago, so I’m pretty new to this passion of quilting. I watched Kimberly Jolly’s Jelly Roll Jam quilt tutorial a little over a month ago. I fell head over heels in love with the Scrumptious fabric collection by Bonnie and Camille for Moda. With lots of hunting, I have secured the gorgeous Scrumptious jelly roll she used in that quilt tutorial. I have to say, I’m having trouble opening and cutting into that gorgeous roll of fabric. Maybe I should start with something I’m not so head over heels in love with. After watching Kimberly make that perfectly cut and sewn quilt…. I don’t want to mess it up.

  2. Needle turn applique is something I have not ever tried. I am not sure I could do it right.

  3. Diane Beavers says:

Yeh for you Paula! A zipper is a big deal and you did it. Thank you too for sharing all the Grandma Sassy stories. What a special lady she was to inspire you and The Color My Heart block is too precious.
Thank you Lindsey, for all the inspiring zipper pouch tutorials. Now Paula, I’ve got to try some applique as I never ever have.

  4. diane beavers says:

Oops forgot to say a huge thank you for the links to the Fat Quarter Shops National Sewing & Quilting Month Blog Tour. It rocks!

  5. mudpiesandpins says:

That’s one cute pouch. I’ve so many things I want to try but I think of the list at the moment is a QAYG quilt – my machine is jsut too small to handle a large quilt so I’m going to have a go at making a QAYG one block by block – now if only I could decided exactly which of my many quilt ideas I want to try out first!

  6. I have done a little applique but would like to make a complete applique quilt sometime soon. I enjoyed reading this post and learning a little about how you started quilting.

  7. I’ve never tried anything but straight seams on a quilt. I’m slightly terrified to try piecing or curved seams but I just need to ‘nut up’ and do it. =D it can’t be harder then some of the historical outfits I’ve made in the past right?

  8. The list is so long but needle turn appliqué is one of the top contenders. Biased binding is a biggie. I can’t even count the blocks I haven’t made but would like to. I guess I need to do a scalloped edge sampler quit and knock off a ton of these. Well, maybe not a scolloped edge. I think rounded corners will do. Thanks for sharing.

  9. farmquilter says:

I would like to make a quilt with a scalloped edge and one with an asymmetrical geometrical edge.

  10. Love your zippered pouch. I definately need one to keep all of my seam rippers in. I have quite a few, but can never find one when I need it. Thank you for the list of lovely blogs to check out and the free heart pattern too

  11. I have always wanted to do a whole cloth quilt. Still have plans. Love your pouch.

  12. “First off I want to say awesome blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to
ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear
your head before writing. I’ve had a hard time clearing my
thoughts in getting my thoughts out. I do take pleasure in writing but it just
seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally
lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or tips?
    Appreciate it!”
