Hexagon Pillow

Adventures in hexagons, check!

Verdict…not guilty, of falling in love with these. Don’t get me wrong, they are cute and a nice hand project to have, but as you can see by the size of this project there will be no full size quilt action!

These are actually a pair of pillows, they look the same so I didn’t show both. Okay, Okay, I haven’t put the other one together:) Soon though, promise! I was always like, I looove hexies! And I do, they are super cute, but a little too time intensive with the putting them together part. Maybe, after you do 1,000 or so, it gets better:) Anywho… I began this project with a full hexie pillow in mind and I knew I wanted it to be in Happy Go Lucky by Bonnie and Camille fabrics. I cracked open that charm pack and got to work with no particular design in mind. Laziness set in and I came up with this one, which I really like by the way…less is more, in this case anyhow.

I made the panel of hexagons and them appliqued them on to the pillow foundation, layered it up and quilted it out.

I wanted it a little retro looking with some bold piping, but I had never piped a thing! So, my sister, who is more seamstress and quilter helped me out. I think it looks nice. There is a special presser foot you use to do this and lots of pins:) A few small puckers along the way, but I can deal.

Rounding the corner was scary a little tricky… a little snip to help the piping bend worked just fine though.

Oh, and here is the back. I did an envelope style back and used a pillow form so the pillow top is removable vs. sewn closed or stuffed for filling.

Oh GIRL! I absolutely LOVE this! You know I love me some quilted pillow cases and this is GORGEOUS! Awesome! :)

  2. Those are beautiful. I love them. Thanks for the links.

  3. Those are beautiful. I love them. Thanks for the links.

  4. It’s lovely! I imagine a whole quilt of those little guys would take FOREVER but you have made a great job of the panel…..

  5. Paula….I love love love them…great work :) If I ever get through my Jane Austen quilt, I will definitely be following your instructions and whip up cushion covers in hexies as well.

  6. Ha ha, same problem over here… Many hexies planned, not so many executed. Still waiting for inspiration! LOL
    Your pillow is gorgeous!

  7. Love it! I like the quilting you did too. Very nice pillow. :-)

  8. Hexies are not fun if you have a deadline! I have found they are something to keep my hands busy in front of the tv but I have given myself permission to really take my time (I’m talking years not weeks or months). We’re young after all!

  9. I have to admit, I am a hexie addict – I typically have a project going (long term) so yes, they are not good with a deadline… I’m in a monthly hexie bee as well, so I get to do one hexie block a month. There’s something to be said about doing handwork though – I love the pillow!

  10. What a wonderful cushion. I love the hexagons and how you used them.

  11. your pillow is so classy! I love the look of hexies too, but I know myself too well- no hand sewing for me!

Thanks (in advance) for linking up to Needle and Thread Thursday!

    :) Kelly

  12. I hear ya. I hand-pieced hexies for a mug rug, and I was done! I have machine pieced larger ones, and that’s not quite so wretched, and I’ve raw-edge appliqued them on, and that was a blast! But I love the look of your pillow(s). Modern, classic, charming, lovely. :)

  13. I really like the “Less is more” look of this pillow. It emphasizes the hexies even more than if you had done the whole front. I also like the vividness of the hexies on the soft plain fabric making the pillow. Thanks for the inspiration. I might try hexies.
One question: Did you hand stitch the hexies with a blanket stitch or is that by machine?
Have a good week. I’ll be back in my sewing room after the 20th!

I love your hexie pillow! It looks great!

  15. I totally agree on the time extensive issue. I have a WIP hexie pillow cover that I’ve had for months. I really like this idea because I can finish it off right now. That pillow is super cute, I like how you attached the hexies to the solid.

  16. Cute! I love the piping.

  17. So retro and cute! I think I might have time for this. :) Thank you!

  18. Oh, so perfectly cute! I love it!

  19. that’s so cute, I love it :)

  20. Caroline says:

Very cute, just enough hexies, I think:) I love how you quilted it too!

  21. Love, love, love! It’s fabulous, Paula! So glad you linked up to TGIFF!

  22. I think I am with you on the time it takes to plug these hexies out! They look fabulous when done, but geesh the time factor can be tedious:) Love all the details on this pillow and the piping looks perfectly done!!

  23. I love your pillow(s)!!!! I tried hexagons for the first time this week and I really liked doing them. I get tired of watching my littles’ tv shows or messing around on my phone. I love the fabrics!

  24. Very, very cute. I love that you did piping on the pillow too.

  25. Gorgeous.Love it!

  26. Nice! That came together really well. Love it. :)

  27. I really like how your straight line quilting contrasts with the hexagons. Very clever! Well done for trying EPP, I’m a little scared but am going to set myself a big hand project for later this year when all my sewing is packed up for a big move. I figure it’s worth trying when my machine is all packed up :)

  28. That looks great!

  29. Splendid!

  30. This turned out really cute! I’m scared of hexies :) Also, I regularly do piping with just a zipper foot and it’s just fine!

  31. lovely pillow! the piping is fantastic! this skill is on my list of things I want to learn someday :)

  32. I love your pillows Paula! The grey makes such a lovely foil for the hexes and you did a fab job with the piping – nowhere near as difficult as it looks is it?!

Sad it’s taking me so long to catch up with everyone (been a bit under the weather), but thank you soooo much for the kind words on my blog and pattern – you’re really generous x

  33. I love your pillow. I agree that putting the cording on the edge is tricky. Love how you used the buttonhole stitch to put the hexagon on. It really gives it a special touch.

  34. CAROL HORRIGAN says:

Love the hex pillow What size pillow does it make? I am using 12/3 inch hexes for mine

  35. I read this post fully concerning the resemblance of
latest and preceding technologies, it’s awesome article.
