Hi there! I’m Felicity and I blog (sporadically) over at Felicity Quilts. I was delighted that Paula asked me to contribute a tutorial to the awesome Triangle Quilt Along that she’s hosting!

Triangle Garden

I recently made a triangle quilt of my own, which is how Paula found me. As is so often the case for me, I wasn’t entirely certain how to quilt the top once it was done. I do have a tutorial on my blog that shows how to use a photo of your quilt top, a vinyl sheet and washable markers to audition quilting designs. But rainy weather here in Vancouver meant that I didn’t have a photo of my quilt top to work with, so I had to find an alternate method. Here’s what I did:

1. I went to the image that Paula has in the kick-off post for the Quilt Along. I right-clicked on the image, selected Copy Image from the menu, then pasted it into a word processing document. I then printed the document 4 times.

2. Using a coloured pencil, I started doodling possible designs. First I tried some straight lines beside the seams:

OK but seemed like it would take a long time

And then some organic wavy lines:

A curvy S-shaped wave with echoes (I’d seen this design most recently here and loved how it looked):

This one has potential but worried how it would affect all those bias seams

And a spiral:

Yup, this one

3. I chose the design that spoke to me. When I saw it the spiral on my colouring sheet, I just knew it was right choice. As you can see from my finished quilt, I actually did concentric circles, mainly because I didn’t trust myself to be able to execute the beginning of the spiral well enough.

Print as many copies of the sheet as you want – you could even use regular graphite pencil and erase if you wanted to reuse the same sheet. But just give yourself permission to play. You’ll see very quickly what design work for you.

Happy Quilting!

  1. Great quilting inspiration! Thanks!

  2. Wow I love the spiral quilting a bit beyond my skill level. I better start thinking how I am going to quilting this one.

  3. Can we link up for the final even if it isn’t done? I am on vacation and doubt I can accomplish that much in the shortened time. Been thinking about the quilting design tho.

  4. Thanks for the help with finding a quilting design! Just a question though – we have until May 2nd to finish up with the quilting? This has really been fun but challenging to do!

  5. Wow, love that spiral quilting!

  6. Thanks for the prize Paula.
Great tutorial Felicity! I like the idea of drawing that fmq design out a bit.

  7. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to contribute!

One thing I neglected to mention is that I did the quilting using my walking foot.

  8. Paula, thanks for having Felicity give us ideas on how to choose quilt patterns. It is so great to learn new things. I really admire Felicity’s quilt colors and quilting.

  9. Margaret says:

love the spiral but have not machine quilted so do not really know what to do, maybe it will be the 4th quilt I ad to the pile that are waiting to do! there are so many books etc on making blocks but cannot seem to find much about quilting, how unfair is that!

  10. Very nice tip! I usually do something similar with a photo of the quilt and photoshop. This is probably a better plan because you can just sketch and run. Thanks! I’ll try it!

  11. Shelley Martin says:

This is so beautiful Felicity. I would never have thought circular quilting would compliment all the angles of a triangle quilt so well. You did a beautiful job!
