Block 11- Virtual Quilting Bee

This post is a little late because I was out of town this past week, my brother graduated from Navy Boot Camp! We made the long trip to Great Lakes, Illinois and also did a little sight seeing in Chicago. Did the signature hot dog and pizza…of course:) I really wanted to check out some local quilt shops, but figured I wouldn’t torture him on his one day of leave before heading to school in SC. Here is me and my little bro:

Don’t worry, I did find some quilt inspiration at Millennium Park in Chicago. Some cool art work that had me thinking of quilts…

Oh yeah, back to the quilt block! This weeks block is by AmyEllis@Amy’sCreativeSide. To get all the details on the previous blocks in Amy Smart’s Virtual Quilting Bee, visit Amy@Diary of a Quilter. This block was okay, a little confusing during construction, but that was my fabric choices I believe. I think I would have rather used white in place of the blue check print….and I promise this block is square! Do you notice sometimes printed fabric is printed a little wonky and in smaller straight cuts I think it makes it look crooked. No ripping here though:) It’ll do! I used my previous method of pressing open at four patch center and locking or nesting my abutting seams to make things flatter.

Here is where we are at so far: (please ignore the unstained deck, WIP)

Whew! We finally caught up with Amy and the others. Now back to a new block every other week until done. 16 blocks in total.

Keep it Sassy

  1. I really like this block! I think it would be smashing with the white where your blue check is but it’s really great just as it is. Those “things” with the quilt-y designs are certainly unusual but the designs were great for getting the creative juices flowing! Thanks for sharing.

  2. Oh, no…I’m behind again!? I will work on #11 by Friday. I caught up to #10, but really needed to do some summer reading beckoning me, plus the “picket fence” still needs my attention before I can complete the UFO in my sewing room!
I agree with you about print making cuts not look straight. I measure and measure. I really don’t like the straight plaids of the Multi-dot layer cake, because they cut everything off – so the prints all look crooked. I decided to just leave it, unless it was so bad or big enough piece to make a difference in the whole look of a block. I hope it gives it some character, when all is said and done. I have learned to really watch lines and plaids in pre-cut fabrics though.

I like your #11 block. I think the choice of fabrics is delightful and when all together, it looks good.

So glad you were able to celebrate a day with your brother. Families are so important, and with things like they are, our military guys need encouragement and a big Thanks. Please tell him that I thank him for serving.
The park displays were pretty cool, too.
    Have a good week!

  3. Hey Paula!
Congratulations on winning the 11 FQ, ( envy over here ! ) on the Let’s get acquainted blog hop!
Can’t wait to see what you make with them!!!
    Esther

  4. Your blocks look so great together! I need to get caught up.

  5. Congratulations to your brother! Cool art in the park. Those people are secretly quilters at heart!

I love the way you photographed the block in the top picture. Is that a tray? It frames the block perfectly.

  6. You’re so awesome! This quilt is going to look fab in your colour way. I can’t believe how behind I’ve got with it all, but you’re an inspiration to pull my finger out! Chicago looks fun, nothing like a family celebration to bring a smile to the face – and what amazing sculptures! x

Hi Paula, Always love seeing what you are up to. I am going to have to try that four patch center. I think that unstained deck is the perfect background for those quilt blocks ( like maybe you walked all over town until you found one).

  8. Congrats to your brother! You guys look great. :)

SO glad you shared the “blocks so far” picture. I was hoping one of those was coming.

  9. These are coming together really nicely. They look so good all together, thanks for sharing that shot!

  10. Every time you post one of these blocks, I think I have a new favorite! They are all so lovely, Paula! I’m glad that you laid them all out for us this time, and I can say that the blue and orange one is my very fave, even though they’re all great. I’ve been looking for a project for a full FQ bundle of Happy Go Lucky that I have sitting in my cabinet and I’ve been thinking of a sampler quilt..

Thank you so much for sharing this at Needle and Thread Thursday!

  11. Congrats to your brother! I remember when my brother graduated from boot camp, it was actually a little emotional. :)
